New treasures and old...
By Pastor Bobby
Schuller
"And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for
with such sacrifices God is pleased. -Hebrews 13:16
In
Matthew chapter 13, Jesus starts to describe at length the kingdom of God using
parables.
He talks about a seed that falls on ground. Some falls on a
path, some falls on good soil, and some falls among thorns. He tells another
parable about how wheat is planted, but the enemy comes and plants weeds. They
both have to grow together and then someday the weeds will be burned and the
wheat will be harvested. Then he talks about having faith like a mustard seed.
Then he talks about the pearl of great price. Then he talks about a great catch
that is made where all these fish are brought to shore and some good fish are
kept and some bad fish are passed. So, there's this apocalyptic kind of language
about the sheep and goats, what's going to happen to everyone. It's actually
kind of scary stuff.
Jesus sits down with his apostles and he says, "Do
you understand everything I'm telling you? Do you see how important this is that
I'm talking about, that people's eternal destinies are at stake right now,
whether or not they enter the kingdom of God? " And his disciples say yes, and
then here's Jesus' reply: "A teacher of Torah who becomes one of my disciples in
the kingdom of God is like the owner of a home who pulls out of his storehouse
new treasures as well as old." Let me tell you something. This is a wonderful
way to frame how to respond sharing the gospel.
Prayer: Dear Lord, let me go outside my normal comfort
zone to welcome into my life those who need you. May your light shine brightly
through my life and bring others to you. Amen.
